A reply to Slavenka Drakulic
Giving an answer to Slavenka Drakulic’s current Eurozine article from the situation of females swept up within the post-’89 change, Kristen Ghodsee and Adriana Zaharijevic reconsider notions of “emancipation from above” plus the grassroots involvement of ordinary feamales in both the East while the western.
A long time ago in western democracies, ladies banded together and rose up to beat their patriarchal oppressors. They connected hands and pumped fists, putting aside their variations in battle, course, ethnicity and religion. This musical organization of glorious siblings demanded equal liberties, financial possibilities and reproductive freedoms. Democracy empowered ladies to speak down with regards to their liberties, and after many years of difficult fight, western ladies triumphed. Democratic governments had no option but to cave directly into this grassroots activism, created of community arranging and solidarity that is feminist.
